School AI policies, explained for parents
Schools are adopting AI policies because tools like ChatGPT arrived faster than curriculum frameworks could catch up.
Why Schools Are Making AI Rules Now
Schools are adopting AI policies because tools like ChatGPT arrived faster than curriculum frameworks could catch up. Most policies address three overlapping concerns: academic integrity (what counts as original work), data privacy (what student information AI companies can access), and equitable access (some students have home AI tools, others don't). Rather than banning AI outright, many districts are defining when and how students can use it—similar to calculator policies.
What These Policies Usually Cover
Look for guidance on:
- Writing assignments: whether AI drafting is allowed during brainstorming vs. final submission
- Data sharing: whether the school uses AI tools that store student writing or data
- Age gates: restrictions on students using consumer AI apps (often 13+)
- Teacher transparency: whether educators disclose when they use AI in lessons
Ask your child's school directly: Do you have a written AI policy? Can I see it? Most districts will share it, and asking signals you're engaged without triggering defensiveness.
What You Can Do
Help your child understand the reason behind rules ("This builds your own thinking") rather than just the restriction. If your school lacks a policy, that's worth flagging at parent forums—the absence is as notable as the presence.
