GUIDE

The parental controls worth setting up first

The most effective controls are built into your device's operating system before apps are installed.

Start with Device-Level Restrictions

The most effective controls are built into your device's operating system before apps are installed. On iOS, use Screen Time (parent account). On Android, set up Family Link. These let you:

  • Restrict app downloads by age rating
  • Set daily time limits by app category
  • Prevent uninstalls without your PIN
  • Block explicit content in searches and app stores

Configure these before handing over the device. Changing them later often prompts workarounds.

Focus on Network and Real-World Behavior

Device controls are only one layer. Consider:

  • A router with built-in content filtering (NextDNS, Firewalla)
  • Keeping devices out of bedrooms at night—sleep and offline time matter more than any filter
  • Regular, calm check-ins about what kids encounter online, not interrogations

Controls work best when paired with open conversation. Kids who feel safe asking questions are likelier to report problems.

Set Boundaries, Not Surveillance

Blanket monitoring breeds secrecy. Instead, be transparent: "I use these tools because you're still learning what's safe online, not because I don't trust you." Adjust restrictions as they mature and demonstrate judgment.

Start narrow, ease gradually, and explain why.
