Conversation starters: your kid and AI chatbots

Kids are using AI tools in school, apps, and curiosity-driven play.

Why talk about AI chatbots now

Kids are using AI tools in school, apps, and curiosity-driven play. Unlike a search engine, chatbots feel like talking to someone—and kids may share things they wouldn't Google. A simple conversation helps you understand what they're using, why, and what they think is happening on the other end. You're not interrogating; you're building shared awareness.

What to explore together

Ask open questions: What do you use it for? Does it feel like talking to a person? Listen for misconceptions—some kids believe chatbots remember them or have feelings. That's normal; gently clarify that AI is a tool without memory, opinions, or judgment. Discuss boundaries: chatbots shouldn't replace talking to trusted adults about problems, feelings, or private information. Agree on what's off-limits (full names, school, location, passwords).

Keep it ongoing

One conversation isn't enough. As their use evolves, check in casually. Notice if they're relying on a chatbot for emotional support or homework answers in ways that feel concerning. You don't need to ban the tool—framing it as useful but limited gives them a realistic mental model and makes them more likely to come to you with questions.
